As the 2011 grand prize winner of the Opera Foundation’s International Vocal Scholarship, Soprano Kathryn Lewek is rapidly establishing herself as one of the most promising emerging artists today. Ms. Lewek has most recently accepted a contract with the Deutsche Oper Berlin for the 2011-2012 season where she will perform roles in thirteen productions including Queen of the Night and First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen, Heavenly Voice in Verdi’s Don Carlo, Sandman and Dew Fairy in Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel, Barbarina in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, and Pisana in Verdi’s Due Foscari.
Most recently during the 2010-2011 season, Ms. Lewek made New York City debuts in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and on the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. She was also a Music Academy Fellow during the summer of 2009 at the Music Academy of the West in Marilyn Horne’s esteemed vocal program where she was hailed as “…one of those inspiring triumphs from the wings” and was praised for her “strength and radiance.”
Having been widely lauded for her numerous operatic and oratorio performances, Ms. Lewek is also gaining attention for her interpretations of contemporary art song and vast concert repertoire. She has enjoyed appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Barbara Symphony, Musica Sacra, the Fairfield County Chorale, the Berkshire Choral Festival, the Great Neck Choral Society, the Greenwich Choral Society, and the Rochester Chamber Orchestra. With these orchestras and more, she has performed in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s C Minor Mass, Brahms’ Requiem, Haydn’s Kettle Drum Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Haydn’s Grosse Orgelmesse, Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach’s Judas Maccabeus, Carissimi’s Vanitas Vanitatum, Montiverdi’s 1610 Vespers, Zelenka’s Te Deum, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Isreal in Egypt and Bach’s Christ Lag in Todesbanden.
Ms. Lewek has two recordings on the Albany Records label, Kathryn Lewek sings Cary Ratcliff, and the collaborative album Quicksilver, with the internationally acclaimed guitar and flute duo Nicholas Goluses and Bonita Boyd. Ms. Lewek earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Vocal Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where she was also awarded the Performance Certificate in Voice for her many successes upon the Eastman Theater stage. Ms. Lewek continues her vocal studies with the internationally renowned soprano, Diana Soviero, in New York City. Ms. Lewek has also won First Prize in the Classical Idol Vocal Competition in Rochester, NY.
